Sanctuary Industries (SI) is a multi-system conglomeration dealing primarily with mining and commercial transportation solutions. They have been known to take the occasional military contract, however. They also deal heavily with exploration and archaeological corporate expedition operations.
SI wasn't always the business empire that it is today. Founder and CEO Elorrah Evarion started as a crew assistant on an exploration vessel much like the ones that her company builds today. On a routine salvage mission to a faraway planet, her ship's captain was startled by a pirate cruiser entering the system and left, leaving Elorrah behind. Scrounging what she could from the salvage, she scrabbled together a small one person shuttle complete with life support and magnetic grapples. Tracking down a derelict (some critics say it was merely automated) mining carriage passing through the sector, Elorrah was able to capture and re-engineer it into an effective salvaging ship. For many months, she piloted the Molly Brown across space until she had a chance meeting with a group of pirates. She joined them out of survival instinct and had many adventures.
Eventually, Elorrah's natural leadership instincts led her to become the leader of the pirate band, and once they realized this, the pirates marooned her after a successful raid on an unmanned star port. Using her skills and knowledge, she worked round the clock to turn the starbase into a functional ship. In her attempt to travel home, she encountered many traders and mining groups and she was able to strike trades with them for fuel and other goods. Eventually, she dubbed her vessel Sanctuary Base and for a time was quite successful in being a mobile trading post and neutral meeting ground.
Eventually, her past caught up with her, and the pirate group that marooned her came calling at Sanctuary Base. They had discovered she was alive and sought to correct their perceived failing. After a brief battle, Elorrah had two ships, and no more pirate trouble. She repaired and sold the pirate's ship, and in doing so, discovered that there was a bounty for the group, and used the money to start up Sanctuary Industries. As an experienced explorer and pilot, she directs her new business in making functional and effective ships.
